There are several ways to attack the game of Texas Holdem and it’s best to try and mix up your playing style. You don’t want your opponents to be able to predict what you have based on how you always play certain hands, which is why you need to ensure that you mix up your playing style. We’re going to take a quick look at the various playing styles in Texas Holdem right now, so you can learn the different strategies involved in Texas Holdem.

One of the most popular Texas Holdem playing styles is tight aggressive. A tight aggressive player only plays his/her premium hands and isn’t afraid of raising/betting when they’re in a hand.

Loose aggressive players aren’t that popular because you can lose a lot of money playing this style. A loose aggressive player bet/raise a lot of pots and isn’t afraid to make a big bluff. This style is best to mix into your playing style, so you don’t seem too tight, but you’re not too loose either.

Tight passive players aren’t very popular either nowadays with the younger generation of players. Tight passive players sit at the table waiting for monster hands and when they get that hand they’re still hesitant about betting/raising the pot against other players.

Loose passive isn’t a good playing style either for most players, as it can cost a lot of money. You like playing a lot of hands to see flops, but you’re extremely passive after the flop and throw away the best hand a lot.

Ideally you want to be a tight aggressive player, but at the same time you can mix in other elements to your game once you become comfortable. If you have a tight aggressive image at the table you should be able to pull off 1-2 big bluffs on your opponents, as they’ll assume you have the goods when you’re betting/raising. Once you become more experienced at the poker tables you’ll be able to adjust your own playing style to dominate your opposition.

For instance, if you’re sitting at a table with a bunch of new players and they’re all playing passively you can adjust your game to be more loose aggressive rather than tight aggressive. With passive players on your table you want to make a lot of preflop raises and continuation bets on the flop. If you’re called on the flop you should usually slow way down against passive players because they usually have the good already or have a great draw.

When you’re playing a loose aggressive styled player you need to be a lot more aggressive than you normally would. You can let the player steal a few blinds from you, but you also need to make a stand or two. If you only steal the pot once or twice when a loose aggressive player is raising the pot on you, you’ll be able to afford several blinds around the table. It’s also easy to beat loose passive players, as they’re generally calling stations. If you think you have the best hand you should keep your bets pot sized or less to entice the calling station to call with a marginal holding. If you want to steal a pot from a loose passive player you need to make an over bet at the pot and hope your opponent doesn’t re-raise with the nuts.

Once you know how your opponent plays his hands you shouldn’t have a problem beating them. The bigger problems occur when you’re playing an experienced player that mixes up his style. You may think the player is passive and just calling you down, but they may have the nuts and could be slow playing you until the river. You should be able to avoid tough hands against more experienced players by identifying the experienced players and playing tight aggressive against them.

You always want to play a tight aggressive playing style in Texas Holdem, but as mentioned you need to throw in some bluffs and other strong moves when you’re up against weaker opponents. Texas Holdem isn’t all about the cards and a large part of the game is how you play your opponents rather than how you actually play your hand.
